According to the release note (via Neowin), the August 2017 firmware update isn’t meant to address any security, performance, or stability issue. Instead, it’s an update that enables support for Windows 10 S on Surface Pro.

While the added support is a welcome addition, it’s not a complete surprise as Microsoft has previously said that a Surface Pro with Windows 10 S would be an option for customers. Furthermore, the company is now even allowing anyone with a Windows 10 Pro device install Windows 10 S for testing. The new August 2017 firmware update for Surface Pro should download and install automatically. However, if you have not received the update on your Surface, then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update and try to force the download manually.
